I hold similar feelings towards any who serves lychees or sago and dares call it a desert.
Frankly Asian deserts explains why East Asians are so joyless and grumpy.
Asians don’t really do dessert – best you’ll get is a fruit platter in most places, and although there are more dedicated dessert places popping up that will use ingredients like sago, red beans, palm sugar or rose syrup. That being said, the sweetest desert I remember eating was authentic Indian gulab jamun – basically instant diabetes.
At the end of the day it depends on what flavour profile you like and are most familiar with. Most Asian food – Malaysian, Thai, Japanese are fine by me, although I’ve never understood the appeal of stupidly hot Sichuan food because all you get is heat and a numb face.
Don’t mind Italian, French or other European cuisines, but will pass on the high end degustation stuff unless I’m getting it free. Otherwise it’s just too hard to justify the cost for the wankery – can remember a friend telling me they paid $500 for a 10 course meal at Vue and got served Brussel sprout foam. Would much rather cook my own steak and make my own sides the way I like it for a fraction of the cost.
I’ve eaten at some pretty shmick places and eaten some bizarre stuff. I generally blanch at anything over $200 although every couple years we’ll do a food experience that might be double that.
This was part of a degustation put on by the late Jock of Masterchef – Yabbies rolled in green Ants with some wild pea sauce (can’t remember the sauce). If you blow the photo out you can still see some of the ants. It was a hefty price even with matching wines, but still fell short of $500.
It is hard to go over $500 in Australia for a meal without matching wines, but it would be easily believable if he was doing it overseas somewhere
(it was actually really delicious – as fresh water yabbies are. The green ants were also surprisingly flavorsome – better than dukkah or potpurri or whatever Arabs sprinkle on everything)

2) Those foreign currencies are converted to AUD using FX swaps or whatever other fancy derivatives
3) Banks now have AUD denominated assets on their balance sheet which they lend out. This is the only bit I agreed with you on that banks create real AUD but not out of thin air. Backed by collateral.
