one of the great absurdities of the australian housing market to me i’ve always considered, whether buyer or rental, is the extreme abscence of range when it comes to price points. you would think that in a city of say 5 million people it would be possible somewhere to rent some shitty apartment, in whatever fringe area, for less than 200 pw, but that is basically impossible anywhere in aus, even in crappy regional markets. its a stark contrast with u.s markets, which for the most part have affrordable housing options all the way down to the lowliest earners, and everything on up as well. i spent half an hour or so on trulia tonight comparing real estate in places like atlanta to dubbo, exchange rate adjusted i can buy outright mansions in the former for the price of what would qualify as a crappy shack in most u.s cities in dubbo.

A shitty shack here in aus is worth a heap because there is stiff competition for the land it’s on. In somewhere with much less restrictive zoning policies it makes more sense to buy an empty block than one with a piece of shit building on it and knock it down.
